A fantastic early 20th century vanitas still life, French School, c.1930s. Signed 'A. Fremont' to the lower right. Unframed.
A vanitas paining symbolises the transience of life, the futility of worldly pleasures and the inevitability of death. This work depicts a skull atop a book with an artist's palette and paintbrushes, with a depiction of a red chalk drawing pinned to the pine boards above the scene. The work is well painted with fantastic use of shadow to create an effective three dimensional illusion. There is a small hole to the canvas to the left of the book. Verso there is evidence of a historic repair (please see photographs).
A striking work.
