This lovely piece of Victorian mourning jewelry features a 14k gold band inset with plaited hair.
The shield would have typically been engraved with the mourned loved one's name, but this one has been left blank. The inside of the band would also usually have an engraving of some kind, perhaps a birth and death date.
As the popularity of mourning jewelry rose in the 1860s, manufacturers started producing pieces like this to keep up with demand. Some were even made with horse hair rather than human hair. Though I cannot be certain about this piece, it appears to be human hair.
It is unhallmarked but tests for at least 14k gold. The ring is in good condition with minor wear.
