Elegant black and red silk kimono, circa 1925. Beautifully embroidered with a floral and leaf motif in red and cream. Very matching with the red silk lining. Typical pagoda sleeves; belt. Very well preserved. Internal reform forces and pressure from colonial forces ended Japan's isolation in 1854. Trade began again. In Europe, a "craze" for all things Japanese set in. It was to be called Japonism in art and fashion. The loving aesthetics of the everyday quenched Europe's longing for the foreign, for the exotic. Women wrapped themselves in precious silk kimonos, like this one.
