While living in Arles, Vincent van Gogh painted two closely related portraits of Marie Ginoux, the proprietress of the Café de la Gare, shown in traditional Arlesian dress. The earlier version, quickly executed in November 1888 and now in the Musée d’Orsay, features a parasol and gloves on the table and remained in the sitter’s possession until she sold it in 1895.
